Claret women back in league action as they host Baggies
Burnley FC Women return to home action on Sunday, as they welcome West Bromwich Albion to the Lancashire FA County Ground in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League (KO 2pm).
The Claret women remain unbeaten this season, as they come off an away draw against Newcastle United at Kingston Park.
Kirstie Levell showed her excellence as she made a remarkable save from Magpie Georgia Gibson in the opening half.
Newcastle had another chance to take the lead when Emma Kelly drilled the ball towards goal from the middle of the box however the ball drifted over the crossbar.
Burnley had the last opportunity of the game, when Kelly found herself in behind the hosts defence and tried to lift the ball over the head of Magpies captain Donnelly, but the ‘keeper just got her hand to it and denied the Clarets forward to ensure the points were shared.
The Baggies are managed by Siobhan Hodgetts and currently sit at 10th place after four wins, four losses and one draw in the FA Women’s National League action.
The squad come off a 3-1 home defeat against third place Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves secured the first goal in the final five minutes of the opening period from Sophie Bramford as Beth Merrik fired in a dangerous cross from close range.
The lead was then doubled on the stroke of half-time when Destiney Toussaint clipped over the top for Liv Fergusson who spotted the goalkeeper off her line and lifted it over her to double the lead.
However, West Bromwich Albion attempted to fight back as striker Delphi Cole found the back of the net.
But it was Tammi George who secured Wolves the win as she found space on the edge of the box, as she volleyed the ball past Baggie’s keeper.
In the last meeting between the Clarets and the Baggies, the Lancashire side came out on top with a 2-1 victory away from home at The Hawthorns.
The Claret women opened the scoring after six minutes through Lizzie Hamer before Kerry Walklett equalised to take the teams into the break level.
