Hammers strike late to seal victory at Turf Moor
Burnley were denied all three points late on against West Ham after Jay Rodriguez’s second half penalty was cancelled out by two late goals from the visitors.
After causing the Hammers’ defence problems all afternoon, Koleosho won the spot-kick two minutes into the second half and hometown boy Rodriguez was there to fire home from the spot.
Hammers substitute Divin Mubama and Tomas Soucek then struck in the 86th and 91st minute to give the visitors the win in Lancashire.
Manager Vincent Kompany named an unchanged XI from the side that last featured against Arsenal before the international break.
Defender Hjalmar Ekdal returned to the squad on the bench after his lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury with Anass Zaroury also named amongst the substitutes.
First Half
The first effort on goal at a brisk Turf Moor came through Gudmundsson’s stinging effort as the Icelandic midfielder saw his strike from outside the area saved comfortably by Areola.
Kompany’s side were enjoying plenty of the ball in the opening stages and came narrowly close to breaking the deadlock with 12 minutes on the clock, as Rodriguez broke into the area and squared for Amdouni coming in at the back-post but the Swiss forward just couldn’t quite reach the ball to turn it home.
Midway through the first half and there were very few chances for either side, until Amdouni played a neat pass into the area for Koleosho who forced Areola into action as the goalkeeper palmed away the teenager’s on target strike.
Burnley were definitely creating more opportunities than the Hammers in a tight contest and the Clarets came close again 10 minutes before the break when Berge’s dinked cross was lifted into the area and met by the head of Amdouni but it could only trickle just wide of Areola’s post.
With half time approaching and the clash still goalless, the hosts then had a penalty appeal turned down after Koleosho was tripped by the leg of Coufal inside the area but following a VAR review, the decision was given as no foul on the young forward.
Second Half
It was then a carbon copy moment of the penalty appeal before the break just two minutes into the second half, when Koleosho was causing the United defence all sorts of problems and was brought down once again in the box.
This time the penalty was given, as the winger was clipped on his way into the area and Rodriguez stepped up to the spot and slammed home from 12-yards to give the Clarets a dream start to the second 45.
West Ham looked for a response shortly after but when a corner fell to kindly to Paqueta just inside the area, the Brazilian could only fire well wide of the target on the volley.
But Burnley were not settling for just one goal and were close to doubling the lead just before the hour mark when Amdouni’s low-hit strike fizzed into the hands of Areola forcing the Italian keeper to palm it wide for a corner.
With the hosts still leading with less than 20 minutes left to play, Kompany turned to the bench and made his first change of the afternoon as Ramsey replaced Amdouni, who put in a fine shift against David Moyes’ side.
Ramsey then nearly made an instant impact at Turf Moor after latching onto Gudmundsson’s through ball and firing just over the crossbar from inside the area.
Then just as the Clarets looked to be heading towards victory, United equalised through Mubama’s header before stealing all three points in stoppage time through Soucek’s close range strike.
