Massengo brace and Westley strike sees Clarets secure cup win

Burnley’s U21 side booked their place in the next round of the Lancashire FA Senior Cup on Tuesday evening with an impressive 3-1 victory over Liverpool at Leyland.

Han-Noah Massengo netted the opener for the Clarets before Lewis Koumas reacted quickly as he soon found the equaliser just four minutes later for the Reds.

Massengo then bagged himself his second goal of the evening after the break to regain Burnley’s lead as Joe Westley closed the scoring with a strike just past the hour mark.

First Half

The Clarets started off on the front foot when in the 6th minute Darko Churnlinov stormed down the pitch taking on Terrence Miles. He found Massengo at the edge of the box, who hammered the ball straight into the bottom corner leaving Oscar Kelly no chance.

The Reds quickly counter-attacked as Mateusz Musialowski found Koumas in open space near the far post. He fired straight down the middle past Charlie Casper to find an equaliser.

Possession was tight between each team as they both struggled to find a break-through, but Logan Pye tried his luck when he received the ball 30-yards out and took a shot towards goal, however the ball moved swiftly wide out of play.

Red’s Francis Oppong did well to defend as Tom Tweedy was causing chaos down the wing, alongside Will Hugill attempting to find the back of the net. Kelly however, made his presence known in goal, leaving the teams level at the break.

Second Half

Burnley came out on the front foot again as they placed instant pressure on Kelly with shots from Tweedy and Massengo, but he did well to guard the net.

Massengo bagged himself his second of the evening as he dribbled down the pitch through Carter Pinnington, entered the box and fired the ball straight into the bottom corner leaving Kelly behind.

Joe Westley closely followed as he made a brilliant run into an open space, he had time to make a precise shot which undoubtedly found the back of the net.

Liverpool’s Jay Spearing had a chance as he left Joe Ashton behind and lifted the ball towards the top of the goal, however Casper tipped over the crossbar out of danger.

Tweedy had the final chance of the evening as he pelted the ball from a tight angle towards goal, however Kelly did well to block.
