Aston Villa
Unai Emery arrived at Villa Park in October last year and remarkably took the club from 16th place to finish 7th and secure a UEFA Europa Conference League spot.
Now in his first full season in charge, Villa and Emery strengthened the side in the summer with the additions of Youri Tielemans from Leicester City, Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen, Pau Torres from Villareal and Nicolo Zaniolo arriving from Galatasaray.
The Villans carried their form from the back end of last season into this year and despite having the extra Europa League fixtures, Villa topped their group in the competition and Emery’s side still remain unbeaten at home since February this year.
This Christmas sees the Midlands side sit in the Premier League top four for the first time since 2010, which Villa went on to finish sixth that season.
Form Guide
The Clarets travel to Villa Park in fairly strong away form after taking four points from the last three games on the road with a win recently at Fulham and a point at Brighton earlier in the month.
Despite falling to defeat on Boxing Day to Liverpool, Kompany’s side pushed the Reds all the way and created plenty of opportunities until Klopp’s side added a second in stoppage time.
High-flying Villa suffered their first defeat in all competitions since the 5th November on Boxing Day after losing 3-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Four days earlier, Sheffield United put an end to Villa’s 14 match home winning run with a 1-1 draw thanks to Zaniolo’s stoppage time equaliser for the hosts.
Emery’s men sit third in the league table prior to the weekend after an impressive first half of the season and their incredible unbeaten home form still dates all the way back to February this year the last time they suffered defeat Villa Park in the Premier League.
What Vincent Kompany said
“When we played them earlier in the season, I felt straight away they were a strong team. There is a clear structure and they know what they want to do
“Bought young players, who have now matured into proper Premier League players. (Ollie) Watkins, (Leon) Bailey and plenty of others have come in fairly young and turned into experienced players.
“Then there’s a new manager with new ideas that suits the team and it’s worked well for them. I think he’s (Emery) landed at a sleeping giant that is well funded, well supported and he must have done his research and arrived with his methods & ideas turned them into a machine.”
