Clarets boss disappointed with late goal at Turf Moor
Boss Vincent Kompany says he was ‘shocked and disappointed’ to see the Clarets conceded a late controversial goal from the Hatters on Friday night as the hosts came close to securing a 1-0 victory over Luton Town.
Zeki Amdouni gave Burnley the lead in the first half with his fifth goal of the season in all competitions before Town substitute Carlton Morris headed in an equaliser in the 92nd minute as James Trafford was brought down under the challenge from striker Elijah Adebayo.
Speaking post-match at Turf Moor, Kompany highlighted his frustration at the stoppage time equaliser not being ruled out by VAR but insists his team still ‘have to look at themselves and move on’ and had high praise for Rob Edwards’ side.
The Clarets chief said: “I’m sure you can all imagine what’s going through my mind at the moment. I will start off by saying 100% respect and credit to Luton Town, they deserve whatever is coming their way. They’re a good club, with a good manager and good group of players.
“I’m shocked, I’m disappointed and it’s the same discussion that we are having again like we did after Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Forest.
“Of course we have to look at ourselves & move on and you know the person I am, I will only blame us and what we could have done better.
“Right now, I just can’t give explanation for what’s just happened. The boys put up a fight and put in a performance but yet again, we’re talking about another incident.”
The goal that saw Luton ensure the points were shared in Lancashire was checked for a lengthy period of time by VAR, as Adebayo clattered into Trafford who came to gather the ball as Morris headed home and Kompany gave his thoughts on the equaliser.
“First, you have a striker that has gone in and looked at the goalkeeper, takes a step back, backs into him and even looks at the ref for a decision.
“There’s a difference between standing your ground and going into a goalkeeper. It’s a big difference and especially when it involves a goalkeeper.
“Not one Luton player celebrated the goal when it went in, everyone looks around and I thought if i don’t complain here they might get away with this and it gets given.
“But for it to not even be intervened by VAR. I don’t understand how we can go through these phases and I just have to defend my team and my club.”
