Away defeat for a youthful Clarets side
Burnley U21s travelled to the Dransfield Stadium on Tuesday evening as they faced Hull City in the Professional Development League, with the hosts recording a comfortable victory.
It was a lively first half with three goals in the opening 25 minutes and the Tigers pushed on after the break, aided by a red card for Clarets defender Benn Ward.
Andy Farrell’s squad included six players in the U18s age bracket including Brandon Ly and Benji Wetshi, who were introduced in the second half.
Hull started on the front foot and Sincere Hall capitalised on a loose ball in the Burnley area to open the scoring from close range with just two minutes on the clock.
The lead lasted just four minutes as Tommy McDermott picked up the ball in the box and smacked it into the bottom corner to equalise.
The Tigers were then awarded their first penalty of the evening when Murray Campbell, who has recently returned from international duty with Scotland U19s, was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.
Oliver Green took the spot kick but was denied by a fine save from U18s ‘keeper Lewis Forshaw.
Green wasn’t to be denied 25 minutes in, however. The Hull captain was picked out on the edge of the box by Rocco Coyle and curled an effort into the top corner to give them a halftime lead.
The Tigers made it 3-1 shortly after the interval through Tyrell Sellars-Fleming and added a fourth with 20 minutes to play through Trialist B, who got the decisive touch after a goalmouth scramble from a corner.
Ward was then shown a straight red card for fouling Bora Aydinlik and the hosts were awarded their second penalty of the night. This time it was Sellars-Fleming who stepped up and the forward coolly fired straight down the middle.
Sellars-Fleming completed his hat-trick and netted Hull’s sixth goal of the evening as the game neared stoppage time. After receiving the ball on the edge of the area he turned and curled the ball into the top corner, leaving Forshaw no chance.
The U21s continue their Professional Development League campaign when they travel to the SMH Group Stadium in Chesterfield to face Sheffield United on Friday 5th April. Kick-off is 7pm.
