Midfielder talks of mixed emotions at Manchester United draw

Josh Cullen described having ‘mixed emotions’ following the Clarets 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Believing there are plenty of positives to take from the performance, which saw the side strike back from being 1-0 down, he reflected that the point gained was another point in the right direction.

“A little bit of mixed emotions to be honest. I think anytime you come to Old Trafford, it’s a tough place to come we know and anything you can get here should be valuable to the team. But on the other side of the coin, I suppose I think we had big chances in the game and on another day could have probably won it.”

It was a game of big chances for both sides and incredibly with so many chances it took until the 79th minute before the first goal hit the back of the net. Was Cullen expecting a game at Old Trafford to be as open as it was?

“Not really. You want to try and limit the other team to as little chances as you can and try to create as many as we can ourselves. But with the talent of players they have, their going to create chances, especially at home that’s inevitable.

“Aro with some massive saves again, some great defending from the lads and we created chances of our own.

“So, performance I think we can take a lot of positives from. We’ve spoken for a long time now about we’re still willing, there’s fight, we’re not dead and buried. We fully believe that and it’s another point in the right direction today.”

Manager Vincent Kompany spoke in the week leading up to the game of the improvement his side have shown in recent games, with three to go will recent showings give Cullen more confidence heading into the remaining fixtures?

“Yes definitely, tough games to go but we’ve had tough games that we’ve played over the last few weeks, playing against a good Brighton side, going to Sheffield United away is never an easy game and then coming here as well. Every game’s tough in this league, we know that we’ve got three massive games now against good sides. But we have to take the positives from today and what we’ve been building the whole season and believe we can get as many points as we need to stay in the league.”

Finally, Cullen said it was a proud feeling captaining the side at Old Trafford and spoke of relishing the opportunity to test himself against the best players in the best stadiums.

“This season playing in the Premier League at the highest level has always been an ambition of mine, growing up to test myself against the best players, play in the best stadiums in the world. So to lead the team out today was a really nice feeling and good to get a point, that’s the main thing for the team and now we move onto the next one.”
