Clarets boss discusses draw against Red Devils
Manager Vincent Kompany says it was a point gained for his men on Saturday afternoon, as the Clarets came from behind at Old Trafford to ensure the points were shared against Manchester United.
Despite another impressive display from the Clarets with plenty of opportunities created, United took the lead through Antony’s 79th minute strike before substitute Zeki Amdouni dusted himself down after being clattered by Andre Onana and stepped up to equalise from the spot with three minutes left on the clock.
The Clarets boss said: “It was an intense game, a hard fought battle. We played well and although we were going for the win, we need to look at this as a point gained.
“Ok, we could have been a bit more clinical in front of goal but the overall picture is what matters. We had big chances, we showed team spirit. Burnley Football Club did itself proud today, that’s all that matters to us.
“We are where we are in the league for a reason and we’re not perfect, but what was perfect today was the mentality of the team. The attitude towards the game, the togetherness of the group.
“We don’t ever give up, it’s not an option. If you’re representing Burnley Football Club it’s not in the jargon for us. For us, it’s good to hold onto the momentum and be ready for the next game now.”
Despite taking a point from Erik Ten Hag’s men, Kompany admits there’s a slight disappointment amongst the away dressing room that his team didn’t claim all three.
“That’s because we build ourselves up so much, we pump ourselves up like you wouldn’t believe leading into a game.
“It doesn’t matter who we play, the players really believe at the start of every game that they can win, which is a skill in itself when you’ve not had many points, but they do believe that.
“At the end of the game, I don’t think these guys are thinking about anything other. Plus, these guys, it looks like it’s a long time ago but not so long ago we had 101 points in the division below. That means the winning for a lot of lads is something they are used to or want to have on a week-to-week basis.”
Burnley now prepare for their final three league games of the 2023/24 campaign with a home match against Newcastle United up next and Kompany says he’s looking for the players to keep the magic flowing.
Kompany explained: “The task is to do something special against Newcastle at home, that’s as simple as it is at the moment.
“For us, the biggest thing is can we give ourselves a game against Forest where we have something to look forward to? We don’t need much more. We just want that opportunity on that one day.
“That’s enough for us to rally to something special.”
