MATCH REPORT: MANCHESTER UNITED 1 – 1 BURNLEY

April 28, 2024 9:00 am

It’s a point a piece at Old Trafford

An end to end game in Manchester saw the Clarets come away with a precious point at Old Trafford.

A Zeki Amdouni penalty saw Burnley come from behind in the last few minutes of the game as Vincent Kompany’s side continued their fight to stay in the Premier League.

Boss Kompany made one change from the team that beat Sheffield United 4-1 last weekend, with David Datro Fofana in from the start and Charlie Taylor named on the bench.

Seconds from kick-off it was the Clarets who found themselves in a promising position when Fofana took on an early chance but his shot was straight at Andre Onana – who was in for a busy afternoon.

Aiming to insert some dominance on the occasion, the home side put the visitors to work. Antony caused problems forcing Aro Muric into a save with a well taken effort and minutes later he managed to get round Lorenz Assignon but his effort travelled across the face of goal.

The game started to become a little more open 25 minutes in. Good work from Fofana and Wilson Odobert in the box resulted in the youngster sending a curling effort towards goal but Onana reached well to push it out for a corner.

A foul on Fofana by Aaron Wan-Bissaka won the Clarets a free-kick 33 minutes in, in a promising position. Taken by Jacob Bruun Larsen it was only partly cleared and landed with Josh Cullen who found Lyle Foster. It took cat-like reflexes from Onana to keep the striker’s header out!

The visitors were applying pressure though and Man United had their goalkeeper to thank when he did well to keep out another Foster chance.

A section of the Old Trafford crowd thought they’d seen the opener when Christian Eriksen found Alejandro Garnacho out wide but his hit rustled the side netting.

Two minutes additional time saw the Clarets win a free-kick in a dangerous area when Casemiro brought down Bruun Larsen. The hit was too central though and in the end was a comfortable save for Onana.

There were no changes for either side after the break and the Clarets came out positively. Fofana was caught just offside when Lyle Foster’s ball found him but it was a bright start to the restart for Vincent Kompany’s men.

At the other end, Muric did well when neat footwork from Garnacho found Antony in the box but the Kosovan made himself big to block the shot and smothered the rebound.

Chances for both sides continued and 53 minutes in a Garncho strike travelled wide of the post much to the Lancashire side’s relief.

The first change of the afternoon came two minutes later with Zeki Amdouni replacing Fofana. The swiss was straight into the action as he managed to get a shot at goal in front of the travelling support, but his effort flew over.

Garnacho was keen to show his pace but Odobert stepped up to defensive duties and tracked the Argentina international all the way.

Erik ten Hag made a double change 65 minutes in, with Rasmus Højlund and Kobbie Mainoo withdrawn for Amad and Scott McTominay.

The Clarets had to remain switched on to Garnacho though who continued to cause problems, forcing another great save from Muric.

More changes in the 72nd minute saw Johann Berg Gudmudsson introduced for Bruun Larsen.

It would be United who scored first on 79 minutes.

A misplaced pass inside Burnley’s own half was pounced on by Antony.

Full of momentum and looking slightly off balance he still managed to get his shot away past Muric and into the bottom corner.

But as the side in red pushed to increase their lead and with the stadium clock ticking towards ninety minutes – Burnley found an equaliser.

After a scramble in Onana’s penalty area, referee John Brooks was called to the screen by VAR and awarded a Clarets penalty for a foul by the goalkeeper on Amdouni.

The substitute dusted himself off and calmly dispatched the ball from the spot into the bottom corner to make the score level again with just two minutes of normal time to play – sending the visiting Burnley fans into raptures!

As the game moved in to six minutes of stoppage time Burnley even had a chance to win it – only for Onana to make what proved to be a crucial save from Odobert’s effort.

After an entertaining game which saw a combined 43 shots at goal, the whistle blew and the Clarets took a well earned point back to Lancashire!
