Ahead of Saturday’s clash with the Magpies we take a look at players that have represented both clubs over the years

Steve Caldwell

Born in Stirling, Caldwell began his career with Scottish non-league side Hutchinson Vale before joining Newcastle United at 14-years-old.

After penning his first professional deal with the Magpies in 1998, the defender made his debut for the North East side in a 1-0 win over Manchester City in September 2000, before scoring his first goal for the Club two months later in a 4-3 victory against Bradford City in the League Cup.

During his time at St James’ Park, Caldwell had loan spells with Blackpool, Leeds United and Bradford City before eventually departing United in the summer of 2004 to join Sunderland.

Following three years with the Black Cats, the centre-back arrived at Turf Moor in January 2007 and made his first start for the Clarets against QPR a week after joining the Club.

Caldwell became a regular amongst the starting XI over the next two-and-a-half seasons in the Championship and played an integral role as Burnley enjoyed a League Cup run and secured promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs at Wembley in the 2008/09 campaign.

Injuries unfortunately hampered the central-defender’s season in the top-flight as the Scotsman played 13 games, before leaving the Clarets in 2010 to join Wigan Athletic.

Jeff Hendrick

Dublin-born Hendrick started out at St Kevin’s Boys Club in Ireland, which has produced several Premier League footballers over the years, including current Claret Dara O’Shea and the likes of Damien Duff, Evan Ferguson and Ian Harte amongst many others.

The midfielder made the move from St Kevin’s and Ireland to join the youth team at Derby County in 2008. After breaking into the first team in the 2011/12 campaign and becoming a first team regular, Hendrick went on to play over 200 games for the Rams across seven seasons before leaving in 2016 to sign for Burnley.

Hendrick made his debut for the Clarets in a 1-1 draw with Hull City in the Premier League and scored his first goal for the Club in a 2-0 win over Watford before following that up with a spectacular volley against Bournemouth two months later.

The Irishman soon established himself in the starting XI and only missed two games for the Clarets in the 2017/18 season which saw Sean Dyche’s side seal a UEFA Europa League place following a 7th place finish.

After making over 100 appearances in the top-flight for Burnley, Hendrick joined Newcastle United on a four-year deal in the summer of 2020.

The central midfielder scored for the Magpies on his debut for the Club in a 2-0 win against West Ham United but with game time limited at St James’ Park the 32-year-old has spent time on loan with QPR, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday over the past three seasons.

Chris Waddle

Born in Felling in the North East, Waddle joined Newcastle United in July 1980 as a 19-year-old from Tom Law Town and made his debut for the Magpies in a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town.

Waddle quickly established himself a first team regular and in his fourth season with United the attacking midfielder helped the club achieve promotion to the First Division.

After an eye-catching debut season in the First Division with Newcastle which saw the winger score 13 goals, Waddle earnt himself a move to Tottenham Hotspur in 1985.

The forward continued to impress throughout his time with Spurs, Marseille and Sheffield Wednesday before arriving at Turf Moor in 1997 in a player-manager role after brief spells with Falkirk, Sunderland and Bradford City.

Waddle kept the Clarets up after a difficult season and the player-manager made 32 appearances and scored twice before departing in 1998.
