Clarets boss reflects on defeat in North London
Manager Vincent Kompany insists the ‘new season’ begins tomorrow for him and his team, after the Clarets narrowly lost out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday which saw Burnley relegated to the Championship.
Jacob Bruun Larsen gave the visitors the lead on a scorching afternoon in the capital, before Pedro Porro equalised and defender Micky Van de Ven put the hosts ahead in the 83rd minute.
Speaking post-match in London, Kompany admits although there is huge disappointment following relegation, the Clarets chief says there is no time to dwell on it.
The Burnley boss said: “I think the overriding feeling is that you’ve lost a football match, that’s number one, that’s always going to make you feel a bit disappointed.
“Number two, of course it’s having consequences on where we will play next season so that’s another one you have to live with tonight.
“I can guarantee you one thing, tomorrow is day one of us being successful again. Tomorrow is day one of next season for me and our new season starts tomorrow.
“Today the Premier League is over, but tomorrow is a new day of getting back to the Premier League. I always look to the future as something exciting and so tomorrow will bring exactly that feeling.”
On the performance against Spurs itself, Kompany added: “I think the game started well for us, but look you know when you come up against a top six team away from home it’s always going to be a tough ask.
“The team had a go though, they fought, they were really brave in many things they did and at many times…the trend has been that final ball, that last moment of decision, at this speed and this level, we’re still adapting a little to that.
“We’ve been better as the season went on, but it’s not necessarily about the chances we did have, and we did have chances, but we have done the hardest part and it’s just about playing the final ball.
“But I said, no sulking, no moaning, we’ve got to get on with it. I’ve got an exciting team to work with and tomorrow is going to be an exciting day, no matter what.”
The Clarets were backed by another sold-out away end at Tottenham and the supporters stayed until the very end to show their appreciation to Kompany and his team with their voices heard throughout.
“They’ve been brilliant. Up there it’s not like we’ve got a choice, Burnley is the community and the community is the club.
“We know we stick together, we have to work hard. We know it’s not always going to be easy but we will get the rewards for it.
“We will have the good times again.”
